How to create a privacy policy for your WordPress website

General requirements

A simple privacy policy page should include the following information. Make sure that you keep the policy statement clear and explicit so any user can easily understand it.

  • Type of data you collect from your website users (e.g. their names, email addresses, IP addresses, etc.)
  • Type of methods you use to collect and store the data including how long the data is being stored (e.g. cookies, sign up, registration, contact form, etc.)
  • Use of the collected data
  • Third-parties you share the data with (e.g. Mailchimp, Google Adsense, etc.)
  • Clear user guideline about how to block cookies and opt-out of third party advertisements
  • Your business name, location and contact information

Step 1: Create a privacy policy page

Firstly, go to Pages » Add New in your WordPress admin area to create a new page for your privacy policy. As shown below, we recommend you to name the page Privacy Policy so the users can immediately recognize what this page is about.

If you have prepared a text file of your policy statement, simply copy and paste the text into the new page. Of course, you can also use the auto privacy policy generators that we have suggested above. In the example, we have created a privacy policy by using Auto Terms of Services and Privacy Policy plugin and added the shortcode to show the privacy policy.

Don’t forget to click “publish” or “update” after entering the content!

Step 2: Build a custom menu for a privacy policy page

Once you have created the privacy policy page, you can go to Appearance » Menus and create a new menu. If you don’t know how, you can read our previous post to learn how to build a menu in WordPress.

Step 3: Place a privacy policy menu to the footer area

Now it’s time to assign a location to the new menu. Note that there is no rule on where to place a privacy policy. However, if your WordPress theme allows, we recommend you to add this menu to the footer area of your website. By doing so, the private policy will be shown on every page and also, won’t take any space in your main menu.

The easiest way to do this is to use Widget. After building a new menu, you can go to Appearance » Widgets. Here, you will see ‘Navigation Menu’ widget.
